Does diagnostic hysteroscopy treat endometrial polyps?

A diagnostic hysteroscopy uses a slim camera passed through the vagina and cervix to view the inside lining of the uterus. The camera itself is used to inspect the cavity; removal requires suitable instruments and a plan for treatment. If a polyp is found, the clinician may remove it in the same session, or arrange a separate operative hysteroscopy if the setting, equipment, or polyp size makes that more appropriate.

The removed tissue may be sent for laboratory examination. This helps identify what the polyp is and guides follow-up. Endometrial polyps can be linked with irregular bleeding, bleeding between periods, or bleeding after menopause, although some cause no symptoms.

Ask whether your appointment is inspection only or includes possible polyp removal. Beforehand, share medicines, allergies, pregnancy possibility, and any bleeding pattern. Ask how you should prepare, whether you need someone to accompany you, and when normal activity can resume. Keep the follow-up appointment so you can discuss the tissue result and whether further care is needed.

After hysteroscopy, contact your care team promptly for heavy bleeding, worsening pelvic pain, fever, faintness, or unusual-smelling discharge. Seek urgent help for severe pain, collapse, or bleeding that makes you feel weak. Before the procedure, report new pregnancy concerns or an active infection because these may change the timing or plan.
