Short answer

Palpitations are a common presentation of dehydration, because fluid loss can reduce circulating volume and make the heart beat faster or feel more forceful.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Possible trigger
Sweating, fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, or low intake
Other clues
Thirst, dizziness, dry mouth, or darker urine
Immediate step
Stop exertion, cool down, and sip fluids

How dehydration affects heartbeat

Sweating, fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, or low fluid intake can reduce the amount of fluid circulating in the body. The heart may respond by beating more quickly, and you may notice pounding, fluttering, or skipped beats. Thirst, dry mouth, dizziness, tiredness, darker urine, or reduced urination may occur alongside palpitations. Caffeine, stress, fever, anaemia, thyroid problems, medicines, and heart-rhythm conditions can also cause them, so dehydration is not the only possibility.

Steps to take

Stop exertion, sit or lie somewhere cool, and take small sips of water. If vomiting or diarrhoea has caused fluid loss, an oral rehydration solution may replace water and salts when used as directed. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and strenuous activity until the sensation settles. If you have a fluid restriction or heart, kidney, or liver condition, seek individual advice rather than changing intake substantially. Note when the palpitations start, how long they last, and what accompanies them.

When to seek urgent help

Call emergency services for palpitations with chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, new confusion, or collapse. Seek prompt assessment if the heartbeat remains very fast or irregular, episodes keep returning, or dizziness and weakness persist despite rest and fluids. A clinician may need to check your pulse, blood pressure, hydration, medicines, and heart rhythm.

Questions to ask

Could fluid loss explain these palpitations? Should my heart rhythm or blood tests be checked? How much fluid is suitable with my medicines and health conditions?
