Does dehydration cause excessive thirst?

Thirst can follow sweating, hot weather, fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, or not drinking enough. A dry mouth may occur alongside it, but thirst can continue for other reasons. Salty meals, some medicines, high blood sugar, and conditions affecting the kidneys or hormones can all contribute. Persistent thirst with frequent urination deserves a clinical assessment.

Drink water when thirsty and keep fluids available during heat or activity. Replace losses gradually; after vomiting or diarrhoea, a pharmacist can advise on oral rehydration fluids. Limit alcohol and do not use very sugary drinks as your main source of hydration. People with kidney, heart, or liver disease should use the fluid advice given by their healthcare team.

Seek urgent help for intense thirst with confusion, fainting, severe weakness, inability to keep fluids down, or very little urine. Arrange a prompt appointment if thirst is new and persistent, wakes you repeatedly, or occurs with frequent urination, blurred vision, weight change, or vomiting.
