Does dehydration cause dark urine?

When the body has less fluid available, urine may look darker yellow and smell stronger. Urine colour can also change after certain foods, vitamins, medicines, or bleeding in the urinary tract, so colour alone cannot identify the cause. Notice whether the change improves after drinking fluids and passing urine normally.

Sip water regularly and rest somewhere cool, especially after sweating, vomiting, diarrhoea, or exercise. If you have lost fluid through vomiting or diarrhoea, ask a pharmacist about an oral rehydration solution. Avoid relying on alcohol to replace fluids. Pale yellow urine and a return to your usual urination pattern can be reassuring signs, but do not force large amounts of fluid quickly.

Seek urgent medical help if dark urine comes with severe pain, confusion, fainting, inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, blood-coloured urine, or yellow skin or eyes. Arrange medical advice if the colour stays dark despite drinking, keeps recurring, or is accompanied by fever or pain when urinating.

Ask whether your medicines or supplements can alter urine colour, whether you need urine testing, and how much fluid is appropriate if you have heart, kidney, or liver problems.
