Does dehydration cause cloudy urine?

When the body has less fluid available, urine can become darker and more concentrated. Mineral crystals or other concentrated substances may make it look hazy. Cloudiness can also occur with a urinary infection, kidney stones, vaginal discharge mixing with the sample, or other urinary problems. Burning, urgency, a strong smell, lower abdominal pain, or blood makes another explanation more likely and should be discussed with a clinician.

If you can drink safely, take regular fluids and notice whether the urine becomes clearer as hydration improves. Water is suitable for most people, but people with fluid restrictions should follow their clinician’s plan. Avoid relying on colour alone: thirst, dry mouth, dizziness, reduced urination, and tiredness can also accompany dehydration. Do not use leftover antibiotics for cloudy urine.

Seek urgent help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, inability to keep fluids down, or very little urine. Arrange prompt medical review for fever, back or side pain, painful urination, visible blood, pregnancy, or cloudiness that persists despite drinking. A urine test may help distinguish dehydration from infection or another cause.

Ask whether your symptoms suggest dehydration, infection, or a stone, and whether a urine sample is needed. Mention fluid restrictions, recent vomiting or diarrhoea, medicines, pain, fever, or changes in how often you urinate.
