Does cyst removal treat skin cyst?

An epidermoid cyst is a closed sac beneath the skin that may contain keratin. It can form a smooth lump and sometimes develops a central opening or becomes inflamed. During removal, a clinician makes an opening and aims to remove the cyst wall as well as its contents. Removing only the contents may leave the sac behind, allowing the lump to return.

An inflamed or infected cyst may be too tender or swollen for full removal at the first visit. The clinician may first calm the inflammation or drain it, then consider removal when the tissue is easier to treat. Not every lump is an epidermoid cyst, so examination matters.

Do not squeeze, pierce, or cut the lump at home. Keep the area clean and avoid friction from tight clothing or repeated pressure. Tell the clinician whether it has changed size, opened, drained, or become painful, and mention medicines that affect bleeding or healing. Ask about wound care, activity limits, dressing changes, and whether the removed tissue should be examined.

Arrange assessment for a new, growing, recurrent, or bothersome lump. Seek prompt care if it becomes rapidly more painful, hot, red, very swollen, or starts draining with fever or feeling unwell. Urgent review is appropriate when swelling affects the eye, mouth, or ability to move the nearby area.
