Does cutaneous lupus cause sun sensitivity?

Cutaneous lupus affects the skin and may cause patches, plaques, scaling, color change, or scarring. Sunlight can trigger or intensify inflammation in exposed areas, including the face, ears, scalp, neck, and arms. A flare may appear after exposure rather than immediately, so note when the rash changes and which areas were uncovered.

Sun sensitivity is not unique to lupus. Medicines, other inflammatory skin conditions, and reactions to products can also make skin react to light. A clinician uses the rash pattern, symptoms, examination, and medical history to work out the cause.

Use shade, clothing that covers exposed skin, and a broad-spectrum sunscreen suitable for your skin when outdoors. Reapply it as directed on the product label, especially after sweating or washing. Avoid tanning devices, and plan outdoor activities for times with less direct sunlight. Continue any prescribed treatment as directed, and keep a record of flare triggers to discuss at review.

Arrange an appointment if a sun-related rash persists, scars, spreads, or repeatedly returns. Seek prompt medical help for eye pain or vision changes, severe facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or feeling acutely unwell. If you already have cutaneous lupus, report a new pattern of symptoms so your clinician can decide whether your treatment needs review.
