Does curettage and cautery treat dermatosis papulosa nigra?

Dermatosis papulosa nigra, or DPN, consists of small dark or skin-coloured bumps, often on the face and neck. Curettage gently scrapes away a selected bump, and cautery uses controlled heat to treat the surface and limit bleeding. The treated site may form a small crust while it heals. Temporary redness or a lighter or darker mark can occur, with the risk influenced by skin tone, treatment depth, and aftercare.

DPN is usually identified by its appearance, but a new, changing, bleeding, or unusual bump should be examined rather than removed without a diagnosis. Removing bumps improves the treated lesions; it does not prevent new DPN from developing elsewhere.

Choose a clinician experienced with pigmented bumps and ask how they assess your skin tone and the treatment area. Do not pick healing crusts or apply unapproved lightening products. Protect the area from sunlight after treatment, because irritation and ultraviolet exposure can make colour changes more visible. Discuss whether treating a small area first would help you understand the healing response.

Have any bump assessed promptly if it changes rapidly, becomes asymmetrical, bleeds, ulcerates, or differs clearly from your other bumps. After a procedure, contact the clinic if redness spreads, pain increases, drainage develops, or the site is not healing as expected.
