Does curettage and cautery treat dermatosis papulosa nigra?

Short answer

Curettage and cautery can treat selected dermatosis papulosa nigra bumps by removing them from the skin surface and controlling the treated area.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the procedure involves

Dermatosis papulosa nigra, or DPN, consists of small dark or skin-coloured bumps, often on the face and neck. Curettage gently scrapes away a selected bump, and cautery uses controlled heat to treat the surface and limit bleeding. The treated site may form a small crust while it heals. Temporary redness or a lighter or darker mark can occur, with the risk influenced by skin tone, treatment depth, and aftercare.

DPN is usually identified by its appearance, but a new, changing, bleeding, or unusual bump should be examined rather than removed without a diagnosis. Removing bumps improves the treated lesions; it does not prevent new DPN from developing elsewhere.

Planning treatment

Choose a clinician experienced with pigmented bumps and ask how they assess your skin tone and the treatment area. Do not pick healing crusts or apply unapproved lightening products. Protect the area from sunlight after treatment, because irritation and ultraviolet exposure can make colour changes more visible. Discuss whether treating a small area first would help you understand the healing response.

When to seek care

Have any bump assessed promptly if it changes rapidly, becomes asymmetrical, bleeds, ulcerates, or differs clearly from your other bumps. After a procedure, contact the clinic if redness spreads, pain increases, drainage develops, or the site is not healing as expected.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the bumps are typical DPN, what colour change is possible during healing, how many areas can be treated safely in one visit, and what aftercare is needed for your skin tone. Ask how new or returning bumps would be evaluated.

Questions people ask

Will curettage and cautery remove all DPN?

It can remove selected bumps, but treatment suitability depends on the bump's size, location, diagnosis, and the desired cosmetic result.

Can DPN return after treatment?

A treated bump may recur or new bumps may appear, so changing lesions should be examined rather than automatically treated again.
