Does cubital tunnel release treat cubital tunnel syndrome?

The ulnar nerve passes behind the inner side of the elbow through a narrow space called the cubital tunnel. Bending the elbow for long periods or leaning on it can increase pressure on the nerve. During release surgery, the surgeon opens the tight roof of the tunnel so the nerve has more room. In some situations, the nerve is moved to a new position; the choice depends on examination findings, nerve stability, and previous injury or surgery.

Before deciding on surgery, discuss symptom duration, hand strength, sensation, work demands, and any nerve tests with an orthopaedic or hand specialist. Non-surgical measures may be considered when symptoms are mild, such as avoiding elbow pressure and limiting prolonged bending. After surgery, follow wound and movement instructions and attend therapy if recommended. Nerve symptoms may improve gradually, particularly when irritation has been present for a long time.

Seek specialist review if numbness is persistent, grip is weakening, fingers are becoming clumsy, or the muscles on the hand are visibly shrinking. After surgery, contact the care team for increasing redness, drainage, fever, severe swelling, or new loss of movement or sensation.

Ask where the nerve is compressed, whether testing is needed, which operation is proposed, how the incision and elbow will be protected, and when you can return to driving, work, sport, or lifting.
