Does COVID-19 cause fatigue?

Short answer
Fatigue is a very common presentation of COVID-19 and can leave you feeling unusually tired or lacking energy.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- How it may feel
- Low energy or exhaustion beyond ordinary tiredness.
- Pacing
- Smaller tasks and rest breaks can be easier to manage.
Why tiredness can be intense
Fighting an infection can increase the body’s demand for rest. Fever, disrupted sleep, reduced food or fluid intake, pain, and less activity can add to the feeling of exhaustion. Fatigue also has many other causes, including stress, anaemia, thyroid problems, depression, medication effects, and other infections. Feeling tired alone cannot determine whether COVID-19 is the cause.
Use your energy carefully
Rest when your body asks for it, but change position and do gentle movement as you are able. Break essential tasks into smaller parts and prioritise food, fluids, and sleep. Avoid trying to catch up with strenuous activity after a better day; an even pace can be easier to tolerate. Check current local public-health guidance about testing and reducing contact with others if COVID-19 is possible.
Signs to act on
Get urgent medical help for trouble breathing, chest pain or pressure, new confusion, inability to stay awake, or blue or grey lips. Contact a clinician promptly if fatigue is getting worse, prevents drinking or managing basic needs, or comes with concerning symptoms such as dizziness, palpitations, or persistent high fever.
Questions to bring
Ask whether testing is appropriate, whether any regular medicine could be contributing to tiredness, and how to return to usual activity safely. Ask which symptoms would make fatigue more concerning in the context of your own health conditions.

Questions people ask
Can fatigue happen before other COVID-19 symptoms?
Symptoms can appear in different orders and combinations. Testing or clinical advice may be appropriate depending on your situation.
Should I push through COVID-19 fatigue?
Avoid strenuous activity when you are unwell. Rest, hydration, and gradual activity as tolerated are usually more sensible.
