Does cortisone injection help with joint pain?

Cortisone is a corticosteroid medicine delivered into or near a painful joint. It can calm inflammation, which may make movement and sleep easier while the joint settles. It does not repair worn cartilage, correct an unstable joint, or treat every source of pain. The expected response depends on the joint, diagnosis, examination findings, and other health conditions.

A clinician should identify the pain source before recommending an injection. Tell them about diabetes, blood-thinning medicine, allergies, infection, and previous injections. Afterward, follow the activity advice provided and use the period of improved comfort to work on a suitable rehabilitation plan if advised. Keep a record of how pain, movement, and daily tasks change.

Contact the treating service promptly if the injection site becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen, or painful, or if you develop fever or feel unwell. Urgent help is needed for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, sudden weakness, or severe pain after the procedure.

Ask which structure is causing the pain, what improvement is realistic, how long to protect the joint, what rehabilitation should follow, and whether another treatment is more suitable.
