Headache after a head injury

A concussion can temporarily affect how the brain processes movement, light, sound, and concentration. Headache may feel like pressure, throbbing, or a diffuse ache, and may occur with dizziness, nausea, sensitivity to light, slowed thinking, or fatigue. Headache alone cannot confirm a concussion, and a head injury can occasionally cause a more serious problem that needs urgent assessment.

What to do after suspected concussion

Stop the activity that caused the injury and arrange medical assessment, especially if symptoms are new or worsening. Take a quiet break, limit screens and bright light if they aggravate symptoms, and return gradually to ordinary activity as advised. Avoid alcohol, driving, contact sport, and anything that risks another head impact until a clinician says it is safe. Have a trusted adult check on you if possible.

Warning signs needing urgent help

Call emergency services for increasing drowsiness, loss of consciousness, repeated vomiting, a seizure, weakness, numbness, slurred speech, confusion, or a severe or rapidly worsening headache. Seek urgent assessment after a head injury if you take blood-thinning medicine, have a bleeding disorder, or cannot be safely observed. Do not wait for symptoms to become obvious after a significant impact.
