Does colposcopy treat HPV infection?

HPV can affect the skin and moist surfaces of the genital area, and some types can cause changes in cervical cells. A colposcopy gives the clinician a magnified view of the cervix and may include a biopsy. This helps assess an abnormal screening result or an area that looks different. The examination addresses the condition of the cervix, not the virus throughout the body.

Attend the recommended colposcopy and complete any follow-up testing. If a biopsy finds cervical cell changes, your clinician may recommend observation or a separate treatment for those cells. There is no colposcopy step that directly clears HPV. Ask about vaccination, safer-sex measures, and whether a partner discussion is useful for your situation; an HPV result does not by itself show when the infection began or who transmitted it.

After a biopsy, contact the clinic for heavy bleeding, fever, increasing pain, or discharge with an unpleasant smell. Get urgent medical help if bleeding is severe, you feel faint, or pain is intense. These symptoms require review after the procedure and are not a way to determine whether HPV has cleared.
