Does colposcopy treat cervical dysplasia?

During colposcopy, a clinician uses a magnifying instrument to inspect the cervix after applying solutions that make unusual areas easier to see. A small tissue sample may be taken for laboratory assessment. The findings help show whether cell changes are low grade, high grade, or absent, and whether an area needs closer follow-up. Cervical dysplasia means abnormal cells on the cervix; it is not the same as invasive cancer.

Follow the appointment plan given after the examination and ask when biopsy results should be available. Management may involve monitoring with repeat testing or a procedure that removes or destroys abnormal cells, depending on the result, the size and position of the change, and your future pregnancy plans. Keep the follow-up appointment even if you feel well, because cervical cell changes often cause no symptoms.

Contact your clinic if you have heavy bleeding, worsening pelvic pain, fever, or unusual discharge after a biopsy or cervical procedure. Seek urgent care for bleeding that is difficult to control, severe pain, faintness, or feeling very unwell. These symptoms need assessment after an examination; they do not indicate the grade of cervical dysplasia by themselves.
