Does colposcopy treat cervical cancer?

During colposcopy, a clinician uses a speculum and a magnifying instrument to inspect the cervix. Special solutions can make abnormal areas easier to see. A small biopsy may be taken for laboratory examination. Colposcopy can identify where abnormal cells are located and help clarify whether changes are precancerous or cancerous, but the examination itself does not remove or destroy cervical cancer.

Follow the appointment instructions and tell the clinic if you are pregnant, take medicines that affect bleeding, or have allergies. You may notice light spotting or mild cramping after a biopsy; follow the clinic's advice about pads, activity, and when results will be discussed. Treatment decisions depend on the biopsy findings, cancer stage, overall health, and personal preferences.

Contact the clinic if bleeding becomes heavy, pain is severe or worsening, you develop fever, or discharge has an unpleasant smell after a biopsy.
