Does colonoscopy treat bowel cancer?

During a colonoscopy, a clinician examines the lining of the rectum and colon with a flexible camera. They can remove some polyps and take a biopsy when an area looks abnormal. A laboratory examines the tissue to confirm whether cancer is present and to describe its features. If cancer has grown deeper into the bowel wall or spread beyond it, treatment may involve surgery, medicines, radiotherapy, or a combination chosen after staging. Colonoscopy may still be useful for assessing the rest of the bowel, but it does not remove disease outside the area reached by the instrument.

If a colonoscopy finds a suspicious lesion, keep the pathology and follow-up appointments so the team can explain the result and next step. Ask whether the lesion was fully removed, whether further scans or surgery are needed, and who will coordinate your care. Before or after a diagnosis, urgent review is also needed for symptoms such as black stools, weakness with bleeding, or inability to keep fluids down.
