Does chronic kidney disease cause frequent urination?

Healthy kidneys concentrate urine and adjust how much water leaves the body. With chronic kidney disease, the kidneys may lose some of that concentrating ability, so urine can be passed more often, including during the night. Frequent urination can also occur with diabetes, a urine infection, medicines that increase urine production, or drinking large amounts of fluid. The symptom alone cannot identify its cause or show how well the kidneys are working.

Record when you urinate, whether the amount seems larger or smaller, and any thirst, burning, urgency, or nighttime trips. Arrange a medical assessment if the change persists or disrupts sleep. A clinician may review medicines and fluid habits, check blood pressure, and order urine and blood tests to assess kidney function and look for other explanations. Do not restrict fluids or stop prescribed treatment without individual advice.

Seek prompt medical help for frequent urination with fever, back or side pain, vomiting, confusion, marked weakness, blood in the urine, or very little urine. Severe breathlessness or rapidly increasing swelling also needs urgent assessment, particularly if kidney disease is already known.
