Does chronic kidney disease cause fatigue?

Reduced kidney function can affect the body in several ways. Waste products may build up, fluid and salt balance may change, and anaemia may develop when the kidneys produce less of a hormone involved in making red blood cells. Fatigue may feel like low energy, reduced stamina, difficulty concentrating or needing more rest. Its pattern, severity and effect on daily tasks help a clinician decide which causes to investigate.

Record when fatigue occurs, how sleep feels, what activity does to your energy and whether you have breathlessness, dizziness, itching, swelling or appetite changes. Arrange an appointment if tiredness persists, limits ordinary activities or occurs with known kidney disease. Bring your medicine list. Do not start iron, supplements or stimulant products without advice, because treatment should follow the cause and kidney function.

Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, new confusion, extreme drowsiness, inability to stay awake, very little urine or rapidly worsening swelling. Urgent assessment is also needed if fatigue comes with black stools, unusual bleeding or sudden weakness.

Ask whether blood tests for kidney function and anaemia are needed, whether sleep or medicines may contribute, and which activity level is sensible while you recover. Ask how to recognise fluid overload or worsening kidney symptoms.
