Does chronic kidney disease cause excessive thirst?

Kidneys help regulate water and salt balance. When kidney function changes, the body may handle fluid differently, and thirst can occur alongside changes in urination, swelling, nausea, itching or tiredness. Some people with kidney disease are instead advised to limit fluids, especially when fluid is building up, so drinking large amounts without guidance may be unhelpful. Thirst alone cannot show how well the kidneys are working.

Note how much you drink, how often you urinate, and whether thirst began after a new medicine, illness, heat exposure or vomiting. Arrange a clinical assessment if it persists or is accompanied by weight change, swelling, dark urine, reduced urination or dizziness. Do not start a fluid restriction or deliberately increase fluids until you have received advice, particularly if kidney, heart or liver disease is known.

Seek urgent care for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, severe breathlessness or rapidly worsening swelling. Sudden thirst with frequent urination, vomiting, abdominal pain or deep breathing also needs prompt assessment because blood glucose or other body chemistry may be abnormal.
