What chorionic villus sampling does

During chorionic villus sampling, a clinician collects a small sample of placental tissue. Laboratory analysis can identify certain chromosome changes, including the extra chromosome associated with Down syndrome. The test provides information about the pregnancy; it cannot remove or correct a chromosome change and does not change the baby's development.

Ask your obstetric or genetics team what the procedure can detect, how it is performed, and when results may be available. Discuss your medical history, pregnancy stage, alternatives such as screening or another diagnostic test, and what each possible result could mean for your choices.
