Does chlamydia cause painful urination?

Chlamydia can inflame the urethra, the tube that carries urine out of the body. This may cause burning or soreness while passing urine, discharge, pelvic discomfort, or pain during sex. Some people have few or no symptoms, so feeling well does not rule out infection after sexual exposure.

Painful urination alone cannot identify the cause. Urinary tract infections, irritation, and other sexually transmitted infections can produce similar symptoms. Seek prompt medical care for painful urination with fever, lower abdominal pain, unusual bleeding, vomiting, or pain in the testicles. Urgent assessment is needed for severe pelvic pain, fainting, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Pregnancy, recent sexual assault, or concern about a child requires tailored care without delay.

Ask which samples are needed, when results should be available, whether other sexually transmitted infections should be checked, and when partners should be contacted. Ask when it is safe to resume sex and whether a follow-up test is appropriate.
