Does childhood immunisation treat diphtheria?

Diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection that can affect the throat and breathing passages. Immunisation trains the immune system to recognise the toxin made by the bacterium, lowering the chance of illness after exposure. It is preventive care, so receiving a vaccine after symptoms have started is not a substitute for assessment or treatment.

A person with suspected diphtheria may need urgent isolation advice, testing and treatment directed at the infection and its toxin. Close contacts may also need medical advice and preventive measures. Do not try to remove a coating from the throat, because this can cause bleeding or worsen breathing problems.

Check the child’s immunisation record with a healthcare professional and discuss any missed or delayed doses. If the child has a persistent sore throat, fever, swollen neck, trouble swallowing or a thick coating in the throat, contact a clinician urgently and mention possible exposure or incomplete immunisation. Keep the child away from close contact until a clinician gives specific advice.

Get emergency help for difficult or noisy breathing, bluish lips, severe weakness, confusion, inability to swallow saliva or rapidly increasing neck swelling. Diphtheria can obstruct the airway and may affect the heart or nerves, so breathing or swallowing symptoms should not wait for a routine appointment. Tell emergency staff about suspected exposure and the child’s immunisation history.

Ask whether the child is up to date with diphtheria-containing vaccines, what to do after a missed dose, and whether household contacts need assessment. If infection is suspected, ask about testing, precautions at home and which warning signs require immediate emergency care.
