Does child health consultation treat hand, foot and mouth disease?

Hand, foot and mouth disease is a contagious viral illness that can cause fever, mouth ulcers and spots or blisters on the hands, feet or other skin areas. The clinician examines the mouth and skin, asks about fever and intake, and checks for dehydration. Similar-looking rashes or infections may need a different plan.

Offer cool fluids often and choose soft foods that are easier to swallow. Avoid acidic or spicy drinks and foods if they sting. Use pain or fever medicine only according to professional advice for your child’s age and weight. Wash hands after toileting or changing nappies, clean shared surfaces and avoid sharing cups, cutlery or towels while your child is unwell.

Seek prompt care if mouth pain prevents drinking, wet nappies become less frequent, urine is very dark, or your child is unusually drowsy. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, severe headache, neck stiffness, a rapidly worsening rash or a child who is difficult to wake.
