Does chest X-ray treat pneumonia?

Pneumonia is an infection affecting lung tissue. A chest X-ray may show areas affected by the illness, although the image is interpreted alongside symptoms, examination findings, and sometimes other tests. It does not kill germs, remove inflammation, or improve oxygen levels by itself. The care plan depends on the likely cause and how unwell the person is.

Follow the treatment plan given by your clinician. Depending on the suspected cause and severity, care may include antibiotics, fluids, rest, oxygen, or monitoring in a healthcare setting. Take prescribed medicine exactly as directed and return for review if symptoms fail to improve or become worse. Do not use leftover antibiotics or stop a prescribed course without advice.

Seek emergency care for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, severe chest pain, or inability to keep fluids down. Prompt review is also needed for worsening fever, breathing difficulty, unusual drowsiness, or symptoms in someone who is very young, older, pregnant, or has a long-term illness.

Ask whether the image supports pneumonia, what treatment is needed, how to monitor breathing and hydration, and when a follow-up examination or repeat imaging is appropriate.
