Short answer

Yes. Chemotherapy can treat voice box cancer, often together with radiotherapy or when cancer has returned, spread, or cannot be removed surgically.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

New or worsening breathing difficulty is an emergency

The short answer

Voice box cancer is also called laryngeal cancer. Its treatment depends on the tumour's position and extent, whether the airway and vocal cords are affected, previous care, and the patient's ability to tolerate treatment.

How chemotherapy may be used

Chemotherapy given at the same time as radiotherapy can make cancer cells more responsive to radiation. This combined approach may be considered when treating the tumour while trying to preserve the voice box. Surgery remains appropriate in some situations, and preserving the organ does not always preserve the same voice or swallowing function.

If the cancer returns or reaches other parts of the body, chemotherapy may be combined with other drug treatments to control growth and ease symptoms. The team should explain the intended outcome and how they will assess it.

Preparing your voice, airway and nutrition

Before treatment, report breathing noise, swallowing difficulty, weight loss, dental problems, hearing changes and kidney disease. An assessment by speech and language therapy or a dietitian can establish safe swallowing advice and help maintain nutrition.

During combined chemotherapy and radiotherapy, throat soreness, thick saliva, taste change and fatigue can build up. Use prescribed pain relief and mouth care, and tell the team early if drinking or swallowing medicines becomes difficult. Do not crush tablets unless a pharmacist confirms that it is safe.

When urgent care is needed

Seek emergency help for struggling to breathe, harsh or high-pitched breathing, rapidly worsening neck swelling, blue or grey lips, coughing up more than a small streak of blood, or inability to swallow saliva. Sit upright while help is arranged and do not attempt to force food or drink.

Contact the oncology service promptly for fever, chills, repeated vomiting, severe diarrhoea, reduced urine, uncontrolled pain, or mouth and throat soreness that stops you drinking. Follow the unit's fever instructions even if your next visit is soon.

Questions about treatment and function

Ask whether chemotherapy is intended to support radiotherapy, treat disease elsewhere, or relieve symptoms. Discuss how each option could affect breathing, voice and swallowing, what rehabilitation is available, and whether a dental, hearing, kidney or nutrition assessment is needed first.

Questions people ask

Does chemotherapy treat voice box cancer?

Yes. It may be combined with radiotherapy or used when cancer has returned, spread, or cannot be removed with surgery.

Can treatment preserve the voice box?

Combined chemotherapy and radiotherapy may allow the voice box to remain in place in selected cases, although voice and swallowing can still change.

Why might swallowing support be needed?

The tumour and treatment can both affect throat comfort, swallowing safety and nutrition, so early specialist input can be useful.
