Does chemotherapy treat bowel cancer?

It may be given after surgery to reduce the chance of cancer cells remaining, before an operation in selected situations, or to control cancer that has spread. The oncology team chooses medicines according to the individual diagnosis and treatment goal.

Chemotherapy uses medicines that circulate through the bloodstream and damage rapidly dividing cancer cells. Treatment is usually arranged in cycles, with medicine days followed by recovery time. It can be used alone or alongside surgery and radiotherapy, depending on whether the tumour began in the colon or rectum and where it is now.

The purpose should be made clear before treatment starts. For some people, the aim is to lower the risk of the cancer returning after surgery. For others, it is to shrink or slow cancer, ease symptoms, and help preserve daily function.

Before each cycle, the care team may review blood tests, current symptoms, other medicines and how recovery went after the previous treatment. Bring an up-to-date medication list, including supplements, because some products can interfere with cancer medicines.

Use the anti-sickness and other supportive medicines exactly as prescribed. Contact the oncology team urgently for a fever or chills, uncontrolled vomiting or diarrhoea, inability to keep fluids down, new bleeding, or rapidly worsening weakness. Chemotherapy can reduce infection-fighting blood cells, so follow the team's temperature instructions even if you otherwise feel well.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, chest pain, collapse, new confusion, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat. Do not wait for a routine appointment when these symptoms occur.

Ask what chemotherapy is intended to achieve in your case, which medicines are planned, how they will be given, and how the team will check whether treatment is working. Also discuss bowel symptoms, nutrition, work, fertility concerns and any travel plans so practical support can be arranged around treatment.
