Does chemical peel treat acne scars?

After acne, a flat brown or red mark is a colour change rather than a true indentation. A peel may help surface colour become more even. Shallow textural scars may soften modestly as the outer skin renews, while deep ice-pick, rolling, or boxcar scars extend beyond what a surface peel can reshape. Raised scars also need special caution because irritation may aggravate them.

Wait until active acne is under control and have the scar type examined before choosing a peel. Tell the clinician about previous pigment changes, sensitive skin, cold sores, medicines, and recent sun exposure. Follow preparation and aftercare instructions, avoid picking flakes, and protect the treated area from sunlight. A staged plan may combine different procedures or skin care, depending on whether the main concern is colour, depth, or raised tissue.

Arrange medical review if a scar becomes painful, itchy, firm, or rapidly enlarges, or if new acne keeps creating scars. After treatment, report intense pain, blistering, open areas, pus, or spreading redness instead of treating the reaction at home.
