Does cervical ectropion cause vaginal discharge?

Cervical ectropion happens when glandular cells that normally line the cervical canal are visible on the outer surface of the cervix. These cells are sensitive and may release clear or white mucus. Discharge linked with ectropion is often noticed without a strong unpleasant smell, marked itching, or burning. Cervical ectropion is not the same as an infection, but similar discharge can also occur with vaginal infections, sexually transmitted infections, hormonal changes, or irritation. Appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Notice the colour, odour, texture, and timing of the discharge, along with itching, pain, or bleeding. Arrange a clinical assessment if the change is new, persistent, or troubling. A clinician may examine the vagina and cervix and recommend swabs or other tests when infection needs to be excluded. Avoid douching and scented products, which can irritate vaginal tissue. If ectropion is confirmed and symptoms are mild, monitoring may be all that is needed; treatment is considered when symptoms continue after other causes have been assessed.

Seek prompt medical care for discharge with pelvic pain, fever, pain when urinating, a strong unpleasant odour, or bleeding after sex. Contact a clinician soon if you are pregnant, have a new sexual partner with possible exposure to infection, or notice green, grey, or blood-stained discharge. These features do not diagnose a particular condition, but they need assessment rather than self-treatment.
