Does cellulitis cause rash with fever?

Cellulitis is a bacterial infection in deeper layers of skin and nearby tissue. The affected area can become red, warm, swollen, tender, and increasingly painful; fever or chills may occur as the body responds. The rash may be less clearly defined on darker skin, so warmth, swelling, tenderness, and a change from the surrounding skin also matter.

A rash with fever can have causes other than cellulitis, including other infections or inflammatory illnesses. A clinician may examine the skin, ask how quickly it changed, and look for an entry point such as a cut, insect bite, ulcer, or cracked skin.

Contact a healthcare professional promptly if you have a spreading, warm, swollen rash with fever. Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing or scratching it, and note its borders and the time symptoms began. Do not delay assessment while waiting to see whether the rash settles on its own.
