Does carpal tunnel release treat carpal tunnel syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome develops when the median nerve is crowded inside a narrow passage at the wrist. During release surgery, the surgeon divides the tight ligament forming the roof of that passage. This reduces pressure and gives the nerve room, which may ease tingling, numbness, pain, and loss of hand function over time.

Symptoms do not always change immediately. Nerve recovery can be gradual, especially when compression has been present for a long time. The incision and palm may also feel tender while tissues heal. Your clinician can explain whether the pattern and severity of your symptoms make surgery suitable.

Follow the surgical team’s instructions about keeping the wound clean, moving your fingers, protecting the hand, and returning to work or lifting. Gentle movement is commonly encouraged, but activities that strain the healing palm should wait until you are advised they are appropriate. Tell the team about ongoing numbness, night symptoms, thumb weakness, or previous wrist problems so the plan matches your situation.

Arrange medical assessment for persistent or worsening numbness, increasing weakness, or symptoms that interfere with sleep or daily tasks. After surgery, contact the care team promptly for spreading redness, drainage, fever, severe swelling, uncontrolled pain, or fingers that become unusually pale, blue, or cold. Sudden loss of hand movement needs urgent attention.
