Does caesarean section treat pre-eclampsia?

Pre-eclampsia involves high blood pressure and signs that organs may be affected during pregnancy or after birth. Delivery is the only treatment that ends the pregnancy, but blood pressure and other risks can continue after delivery. A caesarean is chosen when it is the safest birth route; some people can give birth vaginally. Medicines, monitoring, and treatment to prevent complications may still be needed.

Follow the maternity team’s plan for blood-pressure checks, urine and blood tests, medicines, and fetal monitoring. Ask when delivery is recommended and what warning signs to watch for after birth. Take prescribed medicine exactly as directed and keep postnatal appointments, because symptoms can change after delivery.

Seek urgent maternity care for a severe headache, vision changes, pain beneath the ribs, sudden swelling, shortness of breath, chest pain, confusion, seizures, or reduced baby movements. After birth, these symptoms remain urgent. Call emergency services for a seizure, severe breathing difficulty, or collapse.

Ask how severe the condition is, whether delivery is needed now, which birth route is advised, which medicines will continue after birth, and how your blood pressure will be monitored.
