Does caesarean section treat eclampsia?

Eclampsia is a pregnancy-related emergency involving seizures, often in the setting of pre-eclampsia. Delivery is the definitive step for ending the pregnancy, but a caesarean operation is not a seizure treatment by itself. The team first protects breathing, controls seizures, checks blood pressure, and assesses you and the baby. Depending on the clinical situation, delivery may be by caesarean or vaginal birth.

Care may remain necessary after birth because blood pressure problems and seizures can continue during the postpartum period. Close monitoring helps the team respond to changes in consciousness, breathing, urine output, or blood pressure.

If eclampsia is suspected, treatment takes place in hospital with urgent obstetric and medical support. Do not drive yourself. The team may use anticonvulsant medicine, blood-pressure treatment, oxygen, blood tests, and fetal monitoring while deciding how and when to deliver. Your partner or support person can help by giving staff the seizure duration and any injury details, if it is safe to observe.

After delivery, follow instructions about medicines, blood-pressure checks, warning symptoms, and follow-up. Ask before stopping prescribed treatment, even if you feel better.

Call emergency services immediately for a seizure during pregnancy or after birth, loss of consciousness, severe difficulty breathing, or a new severe headache with visual disturbance. Do not restrain someone who is seizing and do not put anything in their mouth. Move nearby hazards away, place them on their side when possible, and stay with them until help arrives.

Ask what caused concern about eclampsia, which medicines were given, and whether delivery needs to happen now. Ask how your blood pressure and seizure risk will be monitored after birth, which symptoms require emergency help, and when follow-up testing is arranged.
