Does caesarean section treat a breech baby?

Breech presentation means the baby’s bottom or feet are positioned to come first rather than the head. A caesarean birth delivers the baby through an incision in the abdomen and uterus, so it avoids a vaginal breech birth; it does not correct the baby’s position before delivery. Some babies turn head-down before labour, while others remain breech.

The options depend on the baby’s position, gestational stage, your health, the baby’s wellbeing, and the maternity team’s experience. In selected situations, an external cephalic version may be discussed to try to turn the baby before labour.

Attend the recommended antenatal checks so position and wellbeing can be monitored. Ask whether an ultrasound is needed to confirm the presentation and whether turning the baby is appropriate for you. If a caesarean is planned, the team will explain preparation, anaesthesia, recovery, and how delivery timing is chosen. A vaginal birth may be considered in carefully selected cases with suitable clinical support.

Discuss your preferences early, but keep the plan flexible because labour, bleeding, or changes in the baby’s condition can alter the safest delivery route.

Contact your maternity unit urgently if your waters break, you have vaginal bleeding, regular painful contractions, severe abdominal pain, or reduced fetal movement. With a breech baby, cord prolapse is a time-critical emergency; if you feel or see something coming through the vagina after your waters break, call emergency services and do not push it back.

Ask which part of the baby is presenting, whether turning is an option, and what factors affect vaginal versus caesarean birth. Ask when to come to hospital, what symptoms require immediate contact, and how the birth plan would change if labour starts sooner than expected.
