Does a bone density scan treat postmenopausal osteoporosis?

A bone density scan is a diagnostic test. It uses low-dose imaging to measure bone mineral density at commonly assessed sites such as the hip and spine. The result is considered alongside your age, menopause history, previous fractures, medicines, and other health factors.

The scan cannot rebuild weakened bone or prevent a fracture by itself. Its value is to give your clinician information for deciding whether lifestyle measures, prescription medicine, monitoring, or further evaluation may be appropriate.

Ask what the scan result means for your personal fracture risk and whether another cause of bone loss should be checked. Discuss weight-bearing activity that is safe for you, balance and fall-prevention measures, calcium and vitamin D sources, and any medicines that may affect bone. Follow-up timing depends on the result and your overall risk.

Arrange an assessment if you have a new fracture after a minor fall, persistent back pain, loss of height, or risk factors for bone loss after menopause. Seek urgent care after a serious injury or when pain prevents normal movement. A scan should be interpreted with your clinical history rather than used as a stand-alone diagnosis.
