Does blood test treat brucellosis?

Brucellosis is an infection that can cause fever, sweats, tiredness, headache, and muscle or joint pain. A blood test may look for signs of infection or an immune response, but results need to be interpreted alongside symptoms, travel or animal exposure, food history, and examination. One test may not answer every diagnostic question.

If brucellosis is suspected or confirmed, treatment uses prescribed antimicrobial medicines and may require follow-up. Do not use leftover antibiotics or stop a prescribed course when symptoms improve, because the infection can persist or return.

Tell a clinician about contact with livestock or animals, unpasteurised dairy products, recent travel, fever pattern, and any medicines already taken. Attend testing and review appointments, follow the prescribed regimen, and report worsening symptoms or medicine reactions promptly. Rest and drink fluids if able, but these measures do not remove the infection.

People with possible exposure should avoid self-diagnosis from a result alone; laboratory findings and the clinical story are considered together.

Seek urgent medical care for confusion, severe weakness, difficulty breathing, fainting, a severe headache with a stiff neck, persistent vomiting, or rapidly worsening illness. A high fever with marked deterioration also needs prompt assessment, particularly during pregnancy or when immunity is reduced.

Ask which test is being used, when results are expected, whether repeat testing is needed, and what treatment is appropriate if infection is confirmed. Ask how to take each medicine, which reactions need urgent help, and when follow-up will check your recovery.
