Does bisphosphonate therapy treat Paget's disease of bone?

Paget's disease makes some areas of bone remodel faster than normal. The new bone may become enlarged or structurally weaker, even though it can look dense on an X-ray. Bisphosphonates slow the cells that break down bone, helping calm this overactive process. They may ease bone pain and reduce disease activity, but they do not instantly reshape bone that has already changed.

A clinician chooses the medicine and schedule after considering your symptoms, blood tests, kidney health, dental history and which bones are involved. Some people need treatment when the disease is active or affecting a vulnerable location; others may be monitored.

Arrange an assessment with a physician familiar with metabolic bone conditions. Bring a list of medicines and supplements, mention kidney problems or previous jaw problems, and report new bone pain, hearing changes or changes in movement. Do not start leftover tablets or change a prescribed course without advice. Gentle activity may support function, while an exercise plan should account for any bone deformity or fracture risk.

Seek urgent medical help for sudden severe bone or back pain, inability to use a limb, a new deformity, or weakness or numbness that affects walking or bladder or bowel control. Contact your clinician promptly for worsening persistent pain, a new headache with vision changes, or sudden hearing deterioration. These symptoms need assessment rather than being assumed to reflect ordinary Paget's disease activity.
