Does bisphosphonate therapy treat hip fracture?

A hip fracture needs urgent orthopaedic assessment. Depending on the fracture and the person's health, treatment may involve surgery, pain control, prevention of complications, and rehabilitation. Bisphosphonates work differently: they slow bone breakdown so the skeleton can maintain more strength over time.

The treatment may be considered when a hip fracture suggests fragile bone or osteoporosis. Timing and choice depend on kidney function, calcium and vitamin status, dental health, other medicines, and recovery from the injury.

Do not delay emergency assessment for a suspected hip fracture. After initial treatment, attend follow-up appointments and ask whether a bone-health review is needed. Take prescribed medicine exactly as directed and discuss swallowing difficulty, dental procedures, or new thigh or groin pain.

Go to urgent care after a fall if there is severe hip or groin pain, inability to stand, or a leg that appears shortened or turned outward. During treatment, report difficulty swallowing, chest pain, allergic symptoms, or new persistent thigh pain promptly.
