Does atopic dermatitis cause dark circles?

Atopic dermatitis can affect the thin skin around the eyes and cause itch, dryness, redness, scaling or swelling. Repeated rubbing may make the area look darker or more shadowed, and ongoing inflammation can leave colour changes after a flare settles. Dark circles also have many other possible contributors, including natural facial structure, tiredness, allergies and other skin changes. Their presence alone cannot identify atopic dermatitis.

Use a bland, fragrance-free moisturiser suitable for the eyelids and apply it gently without rubbing. Avoid fragranced cosmetics, harsh cleansers and products that sting. A cool, clean compress may soothe itch for a short time. Keep nails short and address triggers that worsen flares. Do not place steroid or other medicated creams close to the eyes unless a clinician has prescribed or specifically advised them, because this area needs careful treatment.

Book an assessment for persistent eyelid rash, recurrent swelling, or colour change that concerns you. Seek prompt care for eye pain, vision changes, light sensitivity, marked swelling, discharge, fever, or blisters near the eye. These features may need assessment for infection or an eye condition rather than routine eczema care.
