Does asthma cause shortness of breath?

Asthma causes swelling and tightening inside the airways, along with extra mucus in some people. This narrows the passages that carry air, so breathing may feel difficult, tight, or unsatisfying. Breathlessness can appear after exercise, exposure to dust or smoke, cold air, or an infection, and it may be worse at night. Symptoms can come and go; feeling better between episodes does not rule out asthma.

Shortness of breath has other possible causes, including infections, allergies, heart problems, and low fitness. A clinician may ask when it occurs, listen to your chest, and arrange breathing tests to understand the pattern.

Notice what brings on the breathing difficulty and whether you also have cough, chest tightness, or wheezing. Move away from smoke and other known triggers, sit upright, and follow your personalised asthma action plan. Use prescribed reliever medicine exactly as directed; do not borrow someone else’s inhaler. Arrange a review if symptoms are recurring, waking you, limiting activity, or needing reliever doses more often than your plan allows.

Seek emergency help if breathing is rapidly worsening, you cannot speak comfortably, your lips look blue or grey, you are becoming exhausted or confused, or your prescribed reliever is not helping. Get urgent medical advice for a new episode of breathlessness, especially with chest pain, fainting, or a very fast heartbeat. Do not drive yourself if breathing is severe.
