Does antibiotic treatment help with coughing up phlegm?

Phlegm is mucus brought up from the airways. A cough that produces it can occur with a viral infection, irritated airways, asthma, smoking or a bacterial chest infection. The colour or thickness of mucus alone cannot establish whether antibiotics are useful. Antibiotics work against bacteria, not viruses, and taking them when they are not indicated can cause side effects and make future infections harder to treat.

Rest, drink fluids if you can, avoid smoke and monitor whether breathing and general health are improving. A pharmacist or clinician can advise about symptom relief and listen to your chest when needed. Do not start leftover antibiotics or someone else's prescription. Record how long the cough has lasted, the amount and appearance of phlegm, fever, wheeze and any breathlessness so the assessment is clearer.

Seek urgent care for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, chest pain, coughing blood or a rapidly worsening condition. Arrange prompt medical review for fever with breathing difficulty, persistent wheeze, dehydration, or a cough that is not settling. People with significant lung disease, weakened immunity or pregnancy should seek advice earlier when symptoms are concerning.
