Does an antenatal care package treat hyperemesis gravidarum?

Hyperemesis gravidarum is severe pregnancy sickness that can make it difficult to keep down fluids, food or prescribed medicines. It is more than ordinary nausea when vomiting and its effects interfere with hydration, nutrition or daily functioning. Antenatal care provides a route to assess the pattern of vomiting, check your general condition and review how the pregnancy is progressing.

Treatment may involve an anti-sickness medicine, fluids, nutritional support or observation, depending on what an examination shows. Clinicians may also check for dehydration and other explanations for persistent vomiting. Some people can be managed with scheduled follow-up and a clear plan at home; others need assessment in an urgent care setting or admission to hospital. The package is therefore a framework for coordinated maternity care, rather than a single treatment that resolves every episode.

Tell your maternity team how often you are vomiting, what fluids stay down, whether you can take medicines, and whether you are passing urine normally. Bring a list of medicines and mention any weight change or previous admission for pregnancy sickness. While waiting for advice, take small sips if you can tolerate them and follow the clinician's instructions about anti-sickness treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicine or delay assessment because you hope the symptoms will settle on their own. Arrange follow-up so hydration, nutrition and the baby's wellbeing can be reviewed.

Contact your maternity team urgently if you cannot keep fluids down, are passing very little or dark urine, feel faint or confused, have a fast heartbeat, or notice blood in vomit. Seek emergency help for severe abdominal pain, difficulty breathing, collapse, heavy bleeding or reduced fetal movement. Ongoing vomiting with fever, pain or a severe headache also needs prompt assessment because another condition may be present.
