Does allergic rhinitis cause postnasal drip?

When an allergy trigger irritates the nose, the lining can swell and make more mucus. Some mucus leaves through the nostrils, while some travels backwards and is felt in the throat. You may notice throat clearing, a tickly cough, hoarseness, or a sensation of something sliding down the back of the throat. The mucus may be clear during an allergic flare. Postnasal drip can also have other causes, so the symptom pattern and accompanying signs help guide assessment.

Try drinking water regularly and consider a saline nasal rinse or spray if it is suitable for you. If using a rinse, use sterile, distilled, or previously boiled and cooled water and clean the device as instructed. Limit exposure to your known triggers where practical. An antihistamine or nasal steroid may help allergy-related inflammation, but ask a pharmacist or clinician how to use it correctly. Do not share nasal devices.

Arrange medical advice if the drainage persists, disrupts sleep, causes repeated throat irritation, or is accompanied by facial pain, fever, wheezing, or difficulty swallowing. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, or a sudden severe allergic reaction. A clinician can distinguish allergic inflammation from infection, reflux, or another nasal problem.
