Does alcohol use disorder cause tremor?

Alcohol can affect the brain and nerves. With repeated heavy drinking, the body may adapt to alcohol's presence; a shaky hand, trembling voice, or general shakiness can appear as the alcohol level falls. Tremor may occur with sweating, anxiety, nausea, poor sleep, a fast heartbeat, or difficulty concentrating. Other causes include medication effects, low blood sugar, thyroid problems, and neurological conditions, so tremor alone cannot identify its cause.

Do not abruptly stop heavy or frequent alcohol use without medical advice, because withdrawal can become serious. Arrange a prompt appointment with a doctor or addiction service to discuss how much and how often you drink, previous withdrawal symptoms, medicines, and other health conditions. A clinician can plan safer reduction or withdrawal support and assess the tremor. Avoid driving if shaking, confusion, or poor coordination makes it unsafe.

Seek emergency help for confusion, hallucinations, a seizure, severe agitation, fainting, chest pain, trouble breathing, repeated vomiting, or a very high temperature after reducing or stopping alcohol. Urgent assessment is also needed for a sudden severe tremor, weakness on one side, trouble speaking, or difficulty walking. These features need immediate evaluation rather than home monitoring.

Ask whether the tremor could be withdrawal or another condition, whether you need supervised withdrawal, which warning signs require emergency help, and how your medicines or other substances may affect shaking. Mention your last drink, any earlier withdrawal, and symptoms that occur alongside the tremor.
