Does adenomyosis cause heavy periods?

Adenomyosis occurs when tissue similar to the womb lining grows into the muscular wall of the uterus. The affected muscle can become enlarged and tender, while the lining-related tissue still responds to hormonal changes during the cycle. This can contribute to heavier or longer bleeding and may occur alongside clots or period pain.

Heavy bleeding does not identify one diagnosis by itself. Fibroids, polyps, hormonal changes, bleeding disorders, some medicines, and other gynaecological conditions may also contribute. A clinician considers your bleeding pattern, examination findings, pregnancy possibility, and overall health.

Keep a record of bleeding days, flooding or leakage, clots, pain, tiredness, and any bleeding between periods. A clinician may check for anaemia and discuss an ultrasound or other assessment based on your symptoms. Treatment choices depend on your goals, age, medical history, whether you want pregnancy, and the severity of bleeding. Ask about options that address both blood loss and pain if both are present.
