Does actinic cheilitis cause chapped lips?

Actinic cheilitis develops after cumulative ultraviolet exposure and often affects the lower lip. The border between the lip and surrounding skin may become less distinct, while the lip feels persistently dry, scaly, rough, or tender. Cracks may recur despite ordinary lip balm. Most cases of chapped lips have other explanations, such as dry air, licking, irritation, or an allergy, so the pattern and persistence need assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Use a bland, fragrance-free lip moisturiser and avoid licking, picking, fragranced products, and products that sting. Use a lip product with broad-spectrum sun protection when outdoors and reapply as directed. Arrange a dermatology review if roughness persists, keeps returning in the same area, or comes with a firm patch, marked tenderness, or a change in the lip outline. A clinician may examine the surface closely and decide whether sampling or treatment is needed.

Seek prompt medical assessment for a lip area that bleeds, forms a persistent crust, becomes thickened, develops an open sore, or does not heal. Arrange urgent help for rapidly developing swelling with trouble breathing or swallowing. These signs do not identify one cause by themselves, but they should not be managed only with moisturiser.

Ask whether the lip changes fit actinic cheilitis or another cause of dryness, whether the lower lip and border need examination, and how to protect the area from ultraviolet exposure. Discuss whether a biopsy is appropriate, which treatment options are available, and how follow-up will check for persistent or changing areas.
