Does abdominal ultrasound treat inguinal hernia?

An inguinal hernia occurs when tissue pushes through a weak area in the lower abdominal wall near the groin. A clinician can often assess it by examining you while standing, coughing, or straining. Ultrasound may be useful when the lump is small, comes and goes, or the diagnosis is uncertain. It can show movement of tissue through the abdominal wall, but the scan itself does not close the opening.

Arrange a clinical assessment if you notice a new groin swelling, pressure, or discomfort. Avoid activities that clearly worsen the bulge until you have advice, and ask how to lift safely. Depending on symptoms, size, and examination findings, a clinician may recommend monitoring or refer you to a surgeon to discuss repair. A support garment should not replace assessment of a new or changing lump.

Go to urgent care if a groin bulge becomes very painful, firm, discoloured, or cannot be gently pushed back when it previously could. Vomiting, increasing abdominal swelling, or inability to pass stool or gas alongside the bulge may indicate trapped bowel and needs prompt assessment.

Ask whether the lump is an inguinal hernia, whether imaging is needed, what activities to limit, and which changes mean you should seek urgent help.
