Does a spine surgery perform spinal fusion?

Spinal fusion, also called spinal arthrodesis, joins two or more vertebrae so that the treated segment becomes more stable as healing occurs. The surgeon may use bone graft material and implants such as screws, rods, or plates. Fusion can be part of treatment for instability, deformity, fractures, or selected painful spinal conditions. It is not automatically appropriate for ordinary back pain; the reason for symptoms, imaging, physical findings, and treatment goals all matter.

Arrange a spine surgery consultation and bring scan reports, medical history, medicines, and a record of previous care. Ask which vertebrae would be treated, what problem fusion is meant to address, and whether decompression without fusion or non-surgical care could be suitable. Discuss smoking, bone health, diabetes, activity, work demands, and the home help you may need during recovery.

Obtain urgent medical help for sudden leg or arm weakness, new bladder or bowel problems, numbness around the saddle area, severe loss of balance, or an inability to walk. After surgery, urgent review is also needed for fever with wound drainage, rapidly increasing pain, or new nerve symptoms.

Ask how fusion may change movement, what healing involves, and how success will be assessed. Clarify implant choices, pain control, physiotherapy, lifting and driving restrictions, follow-up imaging, and warning signs that need immediate attention.
