Does radiology perform a transvaginal ultrasound?

During this internal scan, a slim covered probe is gently inserted into the vagina to obtain close images of the uterus, cervix, ovaries, and nearby pelvic structures. The sonographer performs the imaging and records relevant views; a radiologist or another qualified clinician may review them and issue the report.

Because the probe is closer to the organs, this approach can provide detail without relying on a full bladder. You should receive an explanation and an opportunity to ask questions before the examination begins. Tell the team about pain, bleeding, pregnancy possibility, or concerns about internal examinations.

Confirm whether the referral requests a transvaginal scan alone or alongside an abdominal scan, because preparation can differ. Follow the centre's instructions about bladder emptying, bring relevant medical information, and wear clothing that allows comfortable access.

You can ask the sonographer to explain each step, pause, or stop if the examination becomes too uncomfortable. If an internal scan is unsuitable or you do not consent to it, discuss whether another imaging approach can answer the clinical question.

Arrange urgent medical assessment for severe or worsening pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, fever with feeling very unwell, or possible pregnancy with pain or bleeding. These symptoms need clinical assessment rather than waiting for a routine scan.
