Does radiology perform CT scans?

The radiographer positions you on the scanner table, operates the CT equipment and checks that the required images have been captured. A radiologist is a doctor who reviews those images and prepares a report for the clinician who requested the examination.

Some scans use contrast material to make particular organs, blood vessels or tissues clearer. Contrast may be given by mouth or through a vein, depending on the body area and the clinical question.

Follow the appointment instructions about eating, drinking and medicines. Before contrast is given, tell the radiology team about previous reactions to contrast, kidney problems, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, and all medicines you take. Remove metal items when requested and bring earlier imaging if the facility asks for it.

During the scan, remain still and follow breathing instructions. The scanner is open at both ends, and the radiographer can see and communicate with you throughout the examination.

Get urgent medical help if you develop trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, faintness, or a rapidly worsening widespread rash after contrast. Contact the radiology service or your clinician for persistent vomiting, increasing pain or swelling around an injection site, or any symptom that concerns you after leaving.

Ask which body area will be scanned, whether contrast is planned, how to manage your usual medicines, and who will explain the result. You can also ask whether earlier scans are needed for comparison and how the report will reach the clinician coordinating your care.
